prep day for joan smalls

blonde Afro- wig stacking & rick racking

By Beauty Director Kayla MiChele   @kaylamichelehair

We lived in the moment... picked up the iphone and documented our BTS authentic prep day for our exclusive ‘Joan Smalls as Wildflower’ shoot. Located in the East Village of Manhattan where the sounds of serene ambulances frequent (ha), my work studio became swallowed whole with equipment for this 13 hour prep day. Thankfully, my assistants and I made it through the long day with our typical giggle marathon until the very end.

Here is a glimpse of how we created the larger than life blonde afro look seen on the first cover of DOCUMENTBEAUTY.

You will see cool and creative techniques that I hope will inspire you to think outside the box. See how I stack five wigs together in the first half of the tutorial to customize the giant afro look. In the last half of the video, learn how to do a rick rack u-pin set. Rick rack is a flat braid to form zigzags. I used this on the wig to slightly relax the texture  and lengthen the hair.

I learned this technique many years ago backstage at New York Fashion Week at the Marc Jacobs runway show while assisting hair legend Guido Palau. I am now excited to pass along these fashion and beauty industry hair techniques to you!
